I Went Back for Answers

So girls, I told myself I would stay away. I lasted three days.

After the man in 4B showed me those videos and told me the brother-and-cousin truth, I went downstairs, locked my door, and tried to act normal. I deleted nothing. I blocked no one. I just sat on my bed staring at the wall like the wall had answers. It did not.

By the third night the questions were louder than my pride. I wanted to know how long they had been sharing me. I wanted to know what else they had planned. I wanted to look him in the face again and ask why he told me the truth when the other two were still lying.

I climbed the stairs in the same old shorts. Hair in a rough bun. No makeup. I knocked once.

He opened the door like he had been waiting. Same calm face. He stepped aside without a word. I walked in. The door closed.

The apartment looked the same. One lamp. Clean table. He did not offer me a seat. He just leaned against the counter and waited.

I spoke first. “How long have they been sending you everything?”

“From the beginning,” he said. “The first 2 a.m. text. The night you went to my brother’s place. The coffee with my cousin. All of it.”

My stomach turned. I asked the next question even though I already felt sick.

“Was any of it real? Or was I just a game?”

He looked at me for a long second. Then he walked to a drawer, pulled out a small black notebook, and placed it on the table.

“Open it.”

I did. Page after page of handwritten notes. Dates. Times. Details of what I said, how I sounded, what I liked, what made me come fastest. My own words written in neat handwriting. At the bottom of the last page was a single line that was not about the past.

It said: “She will come back. When she does, tell her the rest.”

I looked up. My voice was barely steady. “What rest?”

He took the notebook, closed it, and set it aside. Then he pulled his phone from his pocket, unlocked it, and turned the screen toward me one more time.

This video was different. It was not me. It was the three of them sitting around a table. Brother. Cousin. Him. They were talking about me like I was a project. Laughing. Planning the next steps. The brother said he wanted to watch next time. The cousin said he wanted to be the one who made me choose. The man in 4B stayed quiet in the video until the end. Then he looked at the camera and said, “If she ever finds out, she belongs to me first.”

The video stopped.

He locked the phone and placed it face down.

“They still do not know I showed you the earlier ones,” he said. “They also do not know I recorded that conversation. I kept it for myself.”

He stepped closer. Not touching me. Just close enough that I could feel the heat from his body.

“You came back for answers. Now you have them. The only question left is what you do with

them.”

He walked past me to the door and opened it.

“You can leave. Or you can stay and decide who you are actually loyal to. I will not chase you. But if you walk out that door, the other two will never stop.”

I stood in the middle of the room with the notebook still open on the table and the video still burning behind my eyes.

I have not decided yet.

And that is the part that keeps me awake.
