Red Flags I Mistook for Foreplay
When chemistry was actually a warning
He had the kind of confidence that should have come with a warning label.
The first time I met him, he smiled like he already knew I was going to be trouble. I told myself I liked his confidence. The truth? I liked the way he looked at me.
There was chemistry.

The dangerous kind.
The kind that makes common sense suddenly feel incredibly boring.
He was mysterious, always disappearing at odd hours and answering certain calls with his back turned toward me.
“Work,” he’d say.
I believed him.
Mostly because I wanted to.
Then there were the little things.
He never let me call him unexpectedly. He avoided weekends. He was strangely protective of his phone. Whenever I asked about his personal life, he’d smile, change the subject and somehow make me forget the question.
At the time, I thought it was sexy.
Private.
Complicated.
I didn’t realize I was basically dating a walking warning sign.
One evening, he cancelled on me at the last minute.
Again.
I was annoyed enough to finally stop making excuses for him.
“Who exactly are you always running off to?” I asked.
He stared at me for a moment.
Then smiled.
That smile should have told me everything.
Instead, it made me suspicious.
So I started paying attention.
And eventually, the truth found me.
Not through him.
Through social media.
One harmless scroll turned into a full investigation.
Then I saw it
A family photograph.
Him.
A beautiful woman beside him.
Two children.
His hand around her waist.
Everyone smiling.
My stomach dropped.
I stared at the screen, then laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because suddenly every confusing moment had an explanation.
The secret calls.
The missing weekends.
The disappearing acts.
The phone he guarded like national security.
He hadn’t been mysterious.
He had been married.
I had spent weeks interpreting his secrecy as chemistry, his distance as temptation and his disappearing acts as some irresistible complication.
Turns out, I wasn’t his complicated love story.
I was his secret.
And that was the day I learned the most embarrassing lesson of all:
I thought those were red flags flirting with me.
Turns out, they were warning me.
